A new fleet of yellow Teslas is hoping to alleviate traffic and pollution in downtown Tampa this fall.

This morning, Tampa Downtown Partnership announced a new transportation option called Dash (stylized "DASH"), or Downtown Area Shared Hubs.  A press release says this new low-cost ride share option will take passengers to over 20 locations, or hubs, in bright yellow Tesla SUVs, driven by “driving-ambassadors.” The locations will be spread across what the Partnership calls downtown Tampa's seven neighborhoods:
  • The Channel District
  • Downtown River Arts Neighborhood Association
  • "Downtown core" (Kennedy, south to the water,)
  • Encore
  • Tampa Heights
  • Water Street
  • West River
Dash will operate through a yet to be released mobile app that will pair up to four passengers (possibly strangers) per ride. According to the release, “DASHing” will only cost a couple dollars, and will be cheaper than other rideshare apps. Though no set price has been announced as of now.

The program centers around a fleet of Tesla Model Y vehicles, with options for passengers who need wheelchair-accessible vehicles to call an ADA-compliant van, as well.

The new rideshare program will add to the already present public transport options in Downtown Tampa like e-scooters, bike lanes, the TECO Line Streetcar, Pirate Water Taxi, and commuter garages.

Tampa Downtown Partnership’s transportation options seek to create easier ways for people to get into the city, without relying on their own vehicles and parking garages.

“That’s how we avoid congestion, reduce pollution, and help people enjoy everything their city has to offer,” said Karen Kress, Senior Director of Transportation & Planning for the Tampa Downtown Partnership.

While this new rideshare program won’t launch until October, it is starting to look for its “driving-ambassadors” on Aug. 1. Drivers will serve as experts on what to do and where to go downtown, and will receive training on how to report any issues to maintenance or law enforcement. Job requirements and pay ranges will be posted with the applications tomorrow.
