After 74 years, the greyhounds at Sarasota Kennel Club are one season away from a much-needed kindness: the end of greyhound racing.

The final season of greyhound racing starts this morning. The 31 percent of voters who opposed Amendment 13 probably aren't loving it, but for animal lovers everywhere, the end of this final season can't come fast enough.

The Sarasota Kennel Club, one of 11 active dog tracks in Florida, chose to end its season a year before the one-year mandate. And while this writer wishes the club would've not had a season at all, she grudgingly has to send them props for doing the right thing before the law takes effect.

While detractors of the ban on using dogs for human amusement say this will put thousands of greyhounds up for adoption, our adopted pets here at the CL offices tell us there are worse fates.

Sarasota's final day is May 4, 2019.

By the way, here's a list of the active tracks:

Daytona Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room (Daytona Beach)

Derby Lane (St. Petersburg)

Ebro Greyhound Park (Ebro)

Mardi Gras Gaming (Hallandale)

Melbourne Greyhound Park (Melbourne)

Naples-Ft. Myers Greyhound Track (Bonita Springs)

Orange Park Kennel Club (Orange Park)

Palm Beach Kennel Club (West Palm Beach)

Pensacola Greyhound Track (Pensacola)

Sanford-Orlando Kennel Club (Longwood)

Sarasota Kennel Club (Sarasota)
