The device was reported in a parking lot near Polk Drive and Benjamin Drive, which were then closed. A bystander who noticed the device near a garbage can in the parking lot called 911 just before 7 a.m., according to a press release from the Sarasota Police Department. Currently, it is unknown how the device made its way to a North Lido Beach parking lot.
Soon after, members of the department’s explosive materials unit determined that the device was a military marking round.
Representatives from MacDill Airforce Base arrived at North Lido Beach, removed the marking round and disposed of the device, according to the press release.
The previously closed beach area and parking lots are reopened and Sarasota Police Officers left the area, according to the press release.
