In conjunction with 350.org's Global Workday Initiative, The Permaculture Guild and volunteers are creating a community garden based on permaculture design at The Faith House, a halfway house in St. Petersburg, this Sunday, October 10th.
More than 30 volunteers are anticipated to come out and lend a helping hand to plant sheet-mulched garden beds, install rain-water catchment systems, plant fruit trees, vegetables and other assorted plants. This project is intended to not only beautify the property and the neighboring community, but to also enhance the recovery of the Faith House residents, as they will be the ones helping tend to the garden and enjoying its harvests. The permaculture garden will provide them with fresh produce, help reduce the Faith House's food costs and give the residents an educational, healthy and therapeutic activity to perform.
Volunteers will include Faith House residents, staff, members of The Permaculture Guild, members of Gaia's Garden Study Group (a local St. Pete permaculture book study group), students from The Boley Center's Pathways out of Poverty Project, as well as members of the community at large.
