Danny and Alex are self-producing a special brand of geeky, charming pop right here in St. Petersburg

Creative Loafing Tampa’s Music Issue 2018 reeks of ‘70s funk and ‘80s pop thanks to these two.

Danny and Alex’s musical partnership began at St. Petersburg’s John Hopkins Middle School, where their peers were busy drenching themselves in Axe body spray while they basked in the glow of '70s funk and '80s jams from Steely Dan, Prince, Beatles and Hall & Oates. What followed was nearly a decade of disappointment and burned bridges, with small successes (anyone remember Sound Parlor?) sprinkled throughout.

“A great deal was lost, and a great deal was learned,” the 22-year-olds told CL. A bad producer moved the duo away from its sound, so the boys started self-producing their own music, which now reeks of an irresistible, geeky, and incredibly catchy charm.

MUSIC ISSUE 2018
Meet 30 young Tampa Bay musicians who are (re)making a scene

Material from the pair’s forthcoming debut album has consisted of singles that are upbeat explorations about coming of age. Songs like “Mrs. Mashay” paint a picture of a teacher-student romance while “Who’s Been Smoking You Out?” tells the well-known tale of love, parties, ganja and jealousy. “Man with a Minivan” is the official theme song for freshly licensed drivers driving shaggin’ wagons. You can listen to the the turtleneck rock via Soundcloud, and read CL contributor Madison Dudley’s extended profile of the band here.
