Ever wonder what someone can do with unused food from local businesses? Go to Green Bench Brewing on Friday, Jan. 8 and eat it yourself because there’s a local nonprofit ready to show you what it’s all about.
360 Eats was created to help find new uses for foods that are close to being thrown away. Founder, chairman and CEO Cameron Macleish created the concept with his mother Ellen Macleish in an attempt to combat food waste and food insecurity.
“We are a mobile nonprofit based in the Tampa Bay Area that rescues and transforms wholesome food that would otherwise go to waste into nutritious and gourmet meals for the hungry and compost to grow food,” says its Facebook page.
The nonprofit works by taking donated food then letting Ellen repurpose it into nutritious, gourmet meals. According to 360’s website, their donors include large food distributors, restaurants, and other nonprofits.
In a little under five months, 360 Eats has turned 10,000 pounds of food into over 3,800 meals and over 1,000 pounds of compost. Businesses can sign up to donate food or partner with 360 Eats through their website. Volunteers can sign up online too.
Friday’s event at Green Bench—located at 1133 Baum Ave. N in St. Petersburg—happens starts at 6 p.m., and the food is priced at the “pay-what-you-feel” level.
