Tonight in live music: Leftover Salmon, Surfer Blood, Public Image Ltd. and more

A breakdown of concerts happening this Fri., Nov. 6, plus a peek at the weekend ahead.

A rather diverse night of music is happening and different genres represented on this Fri., Nov. 6. Check out the concert breakdown below, then take a peek at all the exciting shows coming up this weekend.

Leftover Salmon Boulder, Co.’s self-styled purveyors of “Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass” (a jammy mix of country, rock, bluegrass and zydeco) celebrated 25 years in 2014. Longtime originals Vince Herman (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, washboard) and Drew Emmitt (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, electric guitar) are currently joined by bassist Greg Garrison, drummer Alwyn Robinson, banjo player Andy Thorn and newest member, venerable piano/organ pusher Bill Payne, who you likely know best as co-founder of Little Feat. This should be a ripping show. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

Jayke Orvis, My Graveyard Jaw, Gary Lindsey & Friends It’s a triple header of roots-kicking sounds The Goddamn Gallows and .357 String Band former mandolin and banjo rager Jayke Orvis is a Pittsburgh musician who calls on a mix of punk, blues, honky-tonk, bluegrass and gypsy music in his ass-kicking solo sounds. My Graveyard Jaw brings New Orleans swamp-fried folk fueled by the songwriting talents of gravelly-voiced multi-instrumentalist Michael James (guitar, banjo, kick drum, tambourine). Soulfully bombastic hillbilly hardcore howler Gary Lindsey also has a gut-deep vocal timbre, moonlights with Hank3 in Assjack, and is backed by a rotating cast of musician friends. (Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café, Tampa)

Corey Harris with Wendy Barmore Project Acoustic guitar bluesman Corey Harris had a busy 2014. Though he didn’t recorded any new material, he did publish a bio about one of his chief influencers, Jahtigui: The Life & Music of Ali Farka Toure; saw his PBS documentary Corey Harris Journeys released on DVD; and delivered a concert LP, Live from Turtle Island, showcasing his tried and true blend of modern rhythm n’ grooves and vintage Delta blues brightened by Caribbean and Afro sonic hues. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)

St. Pete Noise Fest The eighth annual two-day (Friday-Saturday) blow-out of avant sounds features more than 40 local and Florida regional noise artists (including St. Pete’s own favorite experimenter, Whitey Alabastard) along with some out-of-towners, each practicing bizarre styles utilizing an array of idiosyncratic instruments in 15 minute sets that begin at 7 p.m. each night. Admission is free. (The Venture Compound, St. Petersburg)

Public Image Ltd. I wonder if hardcore Public Image Ltd. fans call themselves ‘PiLheads’? The UK’s early boundary pushers made an everlasting mark with 1979 album Metal Box, ranked on all-time best of lists by Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.com, and considered a post-punk classic with its dark and chilly vibe and severe instrumental textures that have influenced all manner of experimental music in the decades since. PiL is currently on the road behind 2015 10th LP, What the World Needs Now... (State Theatre, St. Petersburg)

Surfer Blood with Alexander & the Grapes, Sound of Ceres We are treated to more performances by Surfer Blood than your average non-pass-through-state because the Cali-based salt-stained indie alt rock band is originally from West Palm Beach (and likely still has family here). They dropped third studio album 1000 Palms in May and return to town behind it, unfortunately not joined by guitarist Thomas Fekete – he’s currently battling an aggressive form of cancer and Surfer Blood has been collecting donations that help with his treatments all throughout the tour – nor longtime bassist Kevin Williams, who left the band in October and has been replaced by Lindsey Mills. Also on the bill: Colorado’s Sound of Ceres, which warms the stage with hazy-pretty, sample-strewn shoe-gazey pop driven by the sugary breathy coos and murmurs of The Candy Claws primaries Karen and Ryan Hover; and St. Pete-brewed pop-glazed folk rock staple, Alexander and the Grapes. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
