FRIDAY AUGUST 25
The War and Treaty w/Andresia Moseley A new series of workshops at the University of South Florida wants to use art to create healing for “veterans, families, students and all,” so the Marshall Center’s Oval Theatre is opening its doors to anyone who’d like to experience the sounds of Michigan folk and Americana duo The War and Treaty for free (popcorn is gratis, too). The group features bandleader Michael Trotter Jr. who is an Iraq war veteran himself. Expect him and War and Treaty co-founder Tanya Blount to weave a lot of introspective storytelling into a set that will balance trauma and tranquility on the way to hopefully providing a night of relief for those affected by war. (USF Marshall Student Center, Tampa) INFO
Nate Najar Quartet w/John Lamb/James Suggs Studio@620 artistic director and co-founder turns 63 on August 29, and another Bay area luminary — jazz guitarist Nate Najar — celebrates his 36th spin around the sun the day before. To celebrate, they’re gonna throw down at Bob’s spot alongside bassist John Lamb and trumpet player James Suggs. A buncha jazz players and artists getting birthday-loose at a laid-back venue? Sounds like a recipe for one of the best nights of the year. (Studio@620, St. Petersburg) INFO
Deaf Poets w/Geri X/Peyote Coyote Miami garage rock duo Deaf Poets is set to play a more stripped-back affair at St. Pete Records earlier in the day, but this nighttime gig finds the boys — Nicolas Espinosa and Sean Wouters — unfurling the boiling hot rock and roll from a new LP (Lost in Magic City, released in May) inside of The Bends. Singer-songwriter Geri X plays hometown support on the bill, which also includes Deaf Poets tourmates Peyote Coyote — another South Florida outfit on the road in support of its own new EP of Black Angels meets Band of Horse psych rock (Other Moons, released in August 5). (The Bends, St. Petersburg) INFO
The Delta Troubadours w/Sam E Hues/All Day Tuck/more It’s been just over a month since Ybor City last saw Gainesville rock and rollers The Delta Troubadours (the boys played an Americana-flavored affair at New World Brewery in July), but the group formerly known as Gritt is back to play a few blocks down as part of a more eclectic bill that includes rapper Same E Hues and cello-wielding Tampa quartet All Day Tuck. The boys are moving to Nashville soon, so get your licks in now. (Crowbar, Ybor City) INFO
Row Jomah w/Tattered Saints/Donna Lu “College Boy Blues” is a garage rock rager that pays homage to Jack White, and the tune is the anchor on a 10-track, nearly forty-minute joyride from Tampa alternative rock five-piece Donna Lu. The band opens for Clearwater quintet Row Jomah, which is warming up for the release of its own new EP of funk-pop fusion. Springsteen-worshipping Tampa rock and roll outfit The Tattered Saints fills out the rest of this Friday night party. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) INFO
Open Format w/Oprah Spinfrey One half of the duo that brings you Emo Night Tampa is breaking out of the sadness to bring you “everything from Bjork to Company Flow to NIN to Cap’n Jazz to Crime Mob.” Spinfrey says he’s gonna play the “things you wanted to hear [and] things you didn’t know you were gonna like” at this one. (First Chance Last Chance, Ybor City) INFO

Peter White w/Euge Groove Smooth jazz has been relegated to the second HD channel on 98.7 FM in Tampa Bay, but that doesn’t mean local fans can’t get some in real life. Enter guitarist Peter White and saxophonist Steve Grove (aka former Tower of Power member Euge Groove) who’ve teamed up to bring the “White Hot Summer Groove” tour to downtown Clearwater. We can poke fun at the silky sounds of this show, but the pair have sold millions of records along the way. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) INFO
Craig Morgan The U.S. Army vet who used to sing other artists’ demos gets the spotlight to himself at the Dallas Bull gig. Craig Morgan — a Grand Ole Opry inductee — is supporting his 16-year-old, eight-piece discography, and some fans may even recognize him from his Outdoor Channel series Craig Morgan: All Access where he does all the things a good ol’ outdoorsman, soldier, sheriff’s deputy, EMT, adventurer, motocross racer, farmer, family man and country music star is supposed to do on TV. (Dallas Bull, Tampa) INFO
Orlando Voorn w/Brian Busto/Key Key For nearly three decades now, Orlando Voorn has been pushing underground music closer to the surface, and while the 49-year-old Dutchman is known as a pioneer of ‘90s techno, he also spent years before than spinning hip-hop. Voorn — whose early releases saw him take the names X-it, Fixomatic and Trigger — even won the 1983 DMC World Mixing Championship crown back in ‘83 and remains über-relevant to this day. Mind Merge, Voorn’s collaborative March LP with Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins, is a must-listen, and “Tenderness”(a 1995 track he released under the Fix moniker just got a nod in a recent Pitchfork list of “The 10 Best DJ Mixes of July 2017.” (The Dungeon at The Castle, Ybor City) INFO
Chris Barrows Band w/Armageddon Band/F/The Scurvy An old-school Tampa punk (Pink Lincolns co-founder Chris Barrows) comes to Fubar in St. Pete to help celebrate the release of a Rad Girlfriend Records four-way split that also features Judas Priest and Motörhead loving SoFla outfit Armageddon Man. Fort Lauderdale’s F is also on the bill, and its frenetic live show is about as storied as Barrows’ rowdy ways, so expect this to be a wild one for The 600 Block. (Fubar, St. Petersburg) INFO
The Young Something w/BFD/Shua/Ben Buffington AB+Positive has a new name, and we’ll see if it has a new sound at this, its debut show under a new moniker (The Young Something). Alex Bonyata and Bella Beyer say their band has a new EP of indie rock coming soon, so look to get a taste of it at this St. Petersburg listening room. (Hideaway Café, St. Petersburg) INFO
Chris Sgammato All-Star Band Displace guitarist and Bay area music instructor Chris Sgammato brings a band to kick back with him for this free show happening in the shadow of The Ale & the Witch’s many, many taps of delicious craft beer. (The Ale & the Witch, St. Petersburg) INFO
The Rock n Roll Hi-Fives w/Sick Hot/Heroes For Hire Husband and wife Joe and Gloree Centeno are bringing their kids (Eilee and Evren) to Skipper’s Smokehouse. Sounds like a nice family outing, right? Well, the Centenos actually make up the lineup of New Jersey family band The Rock n Roll Hi Fives, which is bringing its latest LP (The Beat, The Sound, The Dragon’s Roar) for a night of Theremin-powered rock (Eilee sings and plays the odd instrument). Wish my summer vacation was that cool. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa) INFO

Royce Lovett w/Ray Benton Armed with a loop pedal and acoustic guitar, Tallahassee singer-songwriter and emcee Royce Lovett will visit Inkwell Pictures’ east Tampa production studio for a stop on his 12-date “Fall Dreams” tour with uplifting, confessional-style rapper Ray Benton. (The Inkwell Center, Tampa) INFO
Flooridians 5-year Anniversary w/Kino Aquino/Hans Abelard Pierre/Nobunaga Ybor City’s Ol’ Dirty Sundays gets a lot of love for embracing the Bboy culture, but here’s a not-so-little party going down seven miles away in Temple Terrace. The Flooridans is a Sunshine and Golden State based crew wholly devoted to dance, and it’ll welcome judges from the U.S. and Australia (plus DJs from as far away as the Netherlands) to help it stage three days of battles and workshops.
