A breakdown of concerts highlights for this Sat., June 4.
She Wants Revenge It's been 10 years since the often enigmatic post-punkers burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut. While not critically acclaimed, the album's resounding popularity has cultivated a cult-like reverence over the decade since its release. To celebrate their concentrated brand of dark pop harmonies, haunting soundscapes and taught guitar work, She Wants Revenge has embarked on a nationwide tour and brings the celebration to Tampa. RIYL: Bauhaus, Joy Division. (The Ritz Ybor, Ybor City) –Brian Roesler
Paying Respect with Not Prince and the Revolution, Acho Brother Last July, Gerald Perez (Maximino, Thee Wilt Chamberlain, Levek) put together a group, Not Prince & the Revolution, to play songs from Purple Rain following its screening for a Reel Deal Thursday presentation. Acho Brother performed David Bowie odes as Seu Jorge did in The Life Aquatic soundtrack (lyrics sung in Portuguese with only acoustic guitar accompaniment) after a Reed Deal showing of that film. This show pays tribute to both now-late artists; Perez re-assembles the band to back his Not Prince in a set that includes Purple Rain material but stretches into Prince’s hits catalog, while Acho Brother gets the evening off to a serenely sweet, low-key start. (Crowbar, Ybor City) –Leilani Polk
Corky Laing Plays Mountain & Kofi Baker Plays Cream Corky Laing was the drummer of Long Island, N.Y. hard rock band Mountain (“Mississippi Queen”). Kofi Baker is the son of Cream drummer Ginger Baker, and he, too, has some fine beat-keeping talents. Both hit the stage in trio formats; the former headlines with Mountain material and more, while the latter opens. (Largo Cultural Center, Largo) –LP
Bobby Meader Music with Swept, Ryan Daniel Tharin Bobby Meader is a man of many words, not to mention a beard aficionado. Some say that Meader is actually a sentient beard, and the person underneath just a vessel for its musical greatness. One or the other fuses light-hearted folk that asks difficult questions lyrically and transitions to blistering punk and back again. Florida's Swept is still developing their sound but for now, have a beautifully mellow, textured and dynamic range with cosmic sluggishness that's easy to get lost in. And rounding out this Saturday bill is Ryan Daniel, a soft and sullen singer-songwriter with incredibly poetic, erudite lyrics. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) –BR
Steve Connelly & the Greater Good with The Outpatients, Jeffrey Brockman The latest project fronted by singing and guitar-slinging Connelly features bassist Michael Dempsey, Ed Woltil on guitar and vocals, and drummer Bryan Thompson, twangy Americana that has a vaguely Tom Petty appeal with added swagger in tracks like “Kingdom Come.” Also of note on this night: AC alternative six-piece The Outpatients, celebrating the release of a new album, Fall From Grace. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa) –LP
Emo Night 1-Year Anniversary Tanner Jones is a co-founder of Floridian emo/math rock band You Blew It!. They are amazingly talented, musically proficient dudes. So who better to guest DJ the PBR-fueled, heart on your sleeve celebration that is Emo Night? Why DJ Tanner Jones, of course! What would any certifiable congregation of fourth wave emo initiates and veterans of the scene be without merch? Pick up a slick tee that's a size too small or some rocking buttons to stick on your messenger bag, and gear up for an incredible time of making new friends (and possibly losing some old ones).
