Do you worry about the rising temperature and diminishing water quality in bodies of water like the Gulf of Mexico? Would you like to marry that concern with the appreciation of fine art? The art gallery at Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City campus offers a solution at its “As the Gulf Turns” art show, which opens on Feb. 6.

A release from HCC explains that as inhabitants of the West Coast of Florida, artists Carol Mickett and Robert Stackhouse—who work collaboratively on pieces as Mickett/Stackhouse Studios—explore the idea that “For what happens Here in the Gulf impacts and is influenced by what happens There in the rest of the World.”

By acknowledging the effects of the warming of the Gulf, Mickett and Stackhouse celebrate the local Florida mangrove and live oak which are natural, large absorbers of CO2.

“Our survival depends on reducing the levels of CO2 in the world,” the statement says. “Like sand in the hour glass, our time is running out.”
