Though Green Light Cinema’s first showing of David Byrne’s “American Utopia” is sold-out, the St. Pete moviehouse added another showing at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.

The Spike Lee joint is a live recording of Byrne’s Broadway show hit festivals last fall before being released on HBO Max and has now arrived theaters for mostly one time showings.

Byrne’s “American Utopia” tour hit St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theater, just a four-minute bike ride away, in September 2018.

“Utopia” falls in that “Is it a television movie or a movie movie?” modern media dilemma and was nominated for “Best Documentary Film” in the fest circuit. It also recently won two Emmys including “Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special” for Lee.

Green Light, at 221 2nd Ave. N, is still running with limited-capacity—so if you miss out on a ticket for the Saturday screening, the film is still available to watch on HBO. It’s definitely worth watching on a big screen at full volume.
