As Floridaโ€™s six-week abortion ban persists, maternal and child health also suffer. But even in the nationโ€™s darkest time for abortion rights since before Roe v. Wade, activists arenโ€™t giving up.

The Tampa Bay Abortion Fund is helping abortion-seekers with out-of-state healthcare, running period pantries and educating the public about why abortions matter. Its event at the Black English Bookstore brings “Liberating Abortion” co-author and activist Renee Bracey Sherman.

In their book, Sherman and journalist Regina Mahone detail a history of racism in womenโ€™s health and the people who fought back, including members of Jane, the Chicago feminists who provided abortions before Roe.

The book explains how abortion has always been essential to community health and examines how society dictates feelings about reproductive health.

General admission is a $10 donation to TBAF. A copy of the book can be added for an extra $20 for paperback and $30 for hardback.

Anyone with a cost barrier can email fundathon@tbafund.com for a discount code. โ€œNo one will be turned away for lack of funds,โ€ per the event description.

Tickets start at $10 for “Liberating Abortion” with Renee Bracey Sherman, happening Monday, May 11, in Tampa.
