As much as we love thoughtful conceptual art at CL, sometimes we just want to see some pretty pictures of animals. Lucky for us, there are at least two opportunities to do so this fall. And, coincidentally, the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s “Beasts and Burdens” and MIZE Gallery’s Critters both open on the same day—September 17.

Works selected for “Beasts and Burdens” at DFAC, curated by Nathan Beard, go beyond superficial pictures of animals to look at human interactions with nature and the role animals play as symbols for our needs, desires, fears and joys in art. Adonna Khare’s mural-sized pencil sketches of animals are sure to impress.

Mize recruited 70 artists to participate in “Critters”—each was assigned a different animal, from dolphins to love bugs to squirrels. Participating artists include Joey Vitale (inchworm), Diane Radel (hippo), The Peach Moon (heron), and Alicia Campos Massó (ant) among others.
