CD review: Mogul Street Reserve, Salutations EP; the prog-pop trio plays a CD release show at New World on Saturday

A battle of the bands-style competition that won Tampa prog-pop power trio Mogul Street Reserve studio time at Morrisound comes to fruition in Salutations, their third EP.

The three-song recording is as well-produced as you’d expect and showcases Mogul’s instrumental chops, tight interplay, keen sense of melody and infectious energy. “For Seasons” kicks-starts Salutations with up-tempo propulsion, its harmonic guitar scales and riffs weaving into the fast-and-heavy syncopated dance between bass and drums, the song’s boyishly charming dual-voice choruses delivered in animated howls over top. This undeniably appealing vocal technique is a Mogul trademark and continues throughout the recording to the closing track, “Jetlagged,” a reggae-punk-emo inspired number that focuses on the trials of love and touring with verses like, “Can a dream come true, if it keeps me away from you? My mind is a mess but it’s made and I’ll follow through.”
