Killer Mike (real name: Michael Render) has been classing up the Atlanta hip hop scene since first appearing on several notable Outkast tracks beginning in 2000, then releasing his own series of fine solo LPs that culminated in 2012’s stellar R.A.P. Music and established his fruitful creative friendship with Brooklyn’s idiosyncratic rapper/producer El-P. They’ve since put out a few albums as Run the Jewels that were embraced by critics and fans alike, and Killer Mike has been using his newly-found clout to support his social activism, venturing from the confines of his conscious, politically-charged songs to start public dialogue about inequality, racism, police brutality and other relevant topics. He also filmed a series of chats with Senator Bernie Sanders at The SWAG Shop in Atlanta this past November, during which they touched on subjects ranging from gun control to democratic socialism.

Killer Mike is the official Convocation Speaker of USF’s 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Week, and as part of the University Lecture Series, he’ll discuss race, hip hop and community. 7:30 p.m., Oval Theater, Marshall Student Center (MSC) at USF, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, free admission.
