Over the summer, Tampa indie/post-punk explorers Career took to the Music Box: Tampa Bay and gave even more life to a rejuvenated plot of Sulphur Springs riverside property with their immersive performance of Structures, an intense meditation on the concept of community and togetherness in the context of a rapidly changing neighborhood.

It was a captivating performance where frontman Ryan Fouche swayed slowly while delivering angry spoken word while his bandmates created a tornado of noise and silence for attendees.

Ahead of another September 17 show in Sulphur Springs, the band has premiered a new song, “Scrapping Metal For Profit.” The cut serves as a primer to a new release, Pattern Finders/Vermicomposting, which will be limited to 100 copies and only available at shows.

“It’s a step-by-step guide for finding, collecting, and cashing in on scrap metal,” is what the band said about the song in an email to CL. “Whether for supplemental income or a fun new hobby, scrapping metal for profit will definitely be a fulfilling endeavor for you, your friends, and your family.”

A few listens reveal something a little darker though. Eviction and a need to collect anything of value before getting the boot seems to be a theme as Fouche, 30, guitarist Sulyn Hago, bassist Matt Ostraco and drummer Leo Suarez piece together a stripped down, must-listen-on-repeat, cut.

“There's a double, even triple/quadruple, narrative for sure,” Fouche told CL, “it's really up to the person listening what they want to focus on.” He was inspired to put lyrics together after watching a family being evicted while sitting on his porch. “It was heartbreaking,” he added when queried on the specifics of the event.

“It could have happened a year ago it could have happened this morning. It's happening right now as I type this out, I'm sure of it.”

At the secret show, Career will be playing a puzzle-pieced version of all of their songs. Listen to “Scrapping Metal For Profit” below. Get some information on the show (although you’ll have to ask someone where it’s actually happening) at CL’s event’s calendar.
