GabeThe Ramones, Rocket to Russia (1977)
Arguably the greatest pop-punk record of all time. I never tire of this fine album. "That's the Ramones’ best album! Number one with a bullet!" fictional crazed teenage super-fan Riff Randall declares in the Ramones' 1979 film, Rock ‘N’ Roll High School, and I tend to agree with Riff. Why this record wasn't a massive success and didn't spawn multiple hit singles upon its release is beyond me. Some of the greatest, catchiest rock tunes of any era are contained on this amazing album. Unfortunately, punk rock had suffered an ill-deserved storm of negativity by the time this was released. The silly, childish antics the Sex Pistols were engaging in on the other side of the pond turned the record industry against the new genre, and the Ramones were the victims of the backlash. I live nowhere near "Rockaway Beach" but every trip I ever make to a local beach has to include the opening cut on this album, which was named after that New York beach. Thirty-something years later and this record still sounds as fantastic as ever!!

After you listen to this album for a few weeks, you'll become addicted and find yourself scrolling through your iPhone automatically searching for it. It'll happen at least 30 times before your birthday, I promise. Check out the video for "Bull Fighter Jacket" after the jump, along with the rest of this week's MM entries.
