Tumultuous times can sometimes serve as catalysts for great art. Take, for instance, the high octane protest song local hip-hop veteran Shadcore released earlier this year. “Knee Off My Neck,” written in response to the brutal murder of George Floyd last May, served as an expression of the venom and anger that coursed through the Tampa Bay artist’s veins and it echoed the sentiments of so many outraged Americans. On the heels of that project, Shadcore (aka Rashad Harrell) is now ready to unleash a full-length release he teased readers with when he spoke to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay over the summer.
Produced, mastered and mixed by local studio whiz (and Holy Terror member) Troy Cedeño, Frisson is a fresh, focused collection of songs as steeped in classic hip-hop as they are bolstered by a real reverence for true R&B music. Upon first listen, the album rings with a sense of familiarity due partly to Shadcore not being afraid to let his musical inspirations flow through him. His deep, clear and forthright vocal stylings are in fine form throughout the duration of the album yet he’s not unwilling to let the spotlight shine on the guests he’s brought along for the ride.
“Must Luv Hip Hop,” which features vocals by J. Ack, is a clever look at modern day predating must-haves (the song cites Run-DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, Kendrick Lamar and several other hip-hop giants as essentials to any relationship). The subject matter turns grittier with “Target Practice,’’ which again touches on the direct and outspoken delivery that Shadcore expressed for “Knee Off My Neck” and shows the depth and variety he’s capable of expertly conveying. This full length album doesn’t disappoint and, thanks to Shadcore’s respect and admiration for his musical predecessors, he’s been able to create a reverential and respectful piece of work that is as rooted in tradition as it is modern, innovative and self-expressive.
