✔️ Mustard Service Late last year, CL poked fun at the moniker of Miami indie-pop band Mustard Service. This is us apologizing. The band — led by delightfully aloof, infinitely charming singer Marco Rivero-Ochoa — played one of the best shows we saw in 2018. Rivero-Ochoa’s croon reminds us of Morrissey, and the band’s cheeky pop songs are for fans of Mac Demarco, Triathalon and even Rufus Wainwright. The self-proclaimed “Zesty Wee Wee Boys” play a free show on Saturday, and you’ll have to find a way down to the plaza outside of Amalie Arena if you want to see the band play before the Tampa Bay Lightning take on the visiting San Jose Sharks. (Ford Plaza at Amalie Arena, Tampa) INFO
✔️ Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival w/Midnight Star/Cece Peniston/RnR Lil Duval fans probably don’t know who Midnight Star is, but they should. The Jacksonville singer and comedian samples the electro-funk group’s 1985 hit “Curious” on his own song (“Smile B— (Living My Best Life)”), which was a No. 1 hit for the Bahamian-American entertainer last year. There’ll be a chance to pay homage on Saturday when Midnight Star returns from a lengthy sabbatical for a headlining set at this two-day concert happening as part of Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival. CeCe Peniston (“Finally”) also plays on Saturday, and some white guys (trumpeter Rick Braun and saxophonist Richard Elliot, playing as “RnR”) are getting in on the action on Sunday. Kids under 12 are free, and more information is available via tampablackheritage.org. (Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, Tampa) INFO
David Wilcox It’s pretty easy to get caught up the the technical prowess of David Wilcox’s arrangements, but the 60-year-old Cleveland songwriter and Great Speckled Bird alum also has a soft side that he’s showing off at this show in support of his 2018 album The View From the Edge. (Craftsman House Gallery, St. Petersburg) INFO
Yo Gotti This Friday-night party probably won’t be as wubby as “Loaded” (Yo Gotti’s collaborative single with Washington D.C. producer Destructo), but it will be packed with fans ready to hear the Memphis rapper work through hits like “Rake It Up” and “Down in the DM.” We don’t have to tell you that these hip-hop club gigs run late while the sets themselves run short, but you’ll probably be too drunk to remember anyway. (Whiskey North, Tampa) INFO
The Oddyssey Quartet CD Release w/Klimchack Rex Shepherd handles guitar on The Oddyssey Quartet’s new album, but he also taps former Albert Ayler Quintet bassist Bill Folwell and former Sam Rivers Rivbea Orchestra saxophonist David Pate for the creation of the 12 improvised pieces that make up We Are All Branches of the Same Tree. Tinkerer and musician Klimchak brings the rare Don Buchla-designed Marimba Lumina (which requires the user to deploy a handful of mallets, six foot pedals and a breath controller) to help him open the show. (Safety Harbor Art and Music Center, Safety Harbor) INFO
Follyball w/Spork/Community Couch A trio of bouncy pop-punk bands come to Seminole Heights for a record store gig when Nashville trio Follyball takes a break from writing for its next LP so that it can complete its “Shit Faced” January mini-tour. Uke-y party-starter Community Couch opens along with jazzy emo outfit Spork. (Microgroove, Tampa) INFO
Bero Bero w/Geri X/Judy Jean Veronica Garcia-Melendez and David Murray’s synth-pop duo has been described as a blend of Sade and Kate Bush. That’s a lot of pressure to live up to, and the Savannah, Georgia outfit better known as Bero Bero will try its best to do just that during this show in support of a new EP, Symbiosis. Long-running St. Petersburg songwriter Geri X opens the show along with another hometown band, Judy Jean. (The Bends, St. Petersburg) INFO
✔️ Ray Barbee Ray Barbee kind of does it all, and for its official 8th annual Clash of the Crews after-party, the Skatepark of Tampa is bringing the musician, artist and no-comply OG to play a concert and show off his latest photography. The 47-year-old may be from a different era (kids these days probably wouldn’t even know what to do with the classic 1988 Powell-Peralta VHS Public Domain, which features Barbee’s debut), but he’s respected in pretty much every corner of the industry. Expect him to deploy loop pedals and drum machines for this solo set that’ll cost you no dollars to get into. (The Bricks, Ybor City) INFO
