✔️ Deicide It’s been more than a decade since founding members Eric and Brian Hoffman departed a band that was one of Tampa’s greatest contributions to death metal, but Deicide’s frontman, Glen Benton, still has beef. “Every time we do a record, they come out and make some kind of a fucking announcement or something,” Benton recently said during a podcast interview. “Every time we do a record, I guess [Eric] loses his mind over there and he can’t handle hearing us proceeding without them.” The record Benton is talking about is called Overtures Of Blasphemy, and Deicide is predictably brutal on it while also allowing itself to explore new textures. ✔️ Misook Yun w/Cicilia Yudha Songs and arias by Franz Schubert, Henry Purcell, Richard Strauss, Joaquin Rodrigo, Fernando Obradors and Giacomo Puccini will be front and center for an evening performance by lyric soprano Misook Yun and pianist Cicilia Yudha, who play for free at this gorgeous downtown Tampa chapel. The Thor Platter Trio If you missed Thor Platter at The Ale and The Witch on Saturday, then don’t worry. The Cleveland songwriter who’s as comfortable playing Neil Young as he is plucking bluegrass is also playing this Sunday brunch at Ella’s, plus the February 7 edition of Rock the Park Tampa. Paul Kovac accompanies on banjo and drums while Paul Lewis handles the low end during this free-to-attend show. (Ella’s Americana Folk Art Café, Tampa) INFO
Ol’ Dirty Sundays DJ Deacon Birthday Bash Mr. Don’t Request Shit celebrates another trip around the sun at this edition of Ol’ Dirty Sundays, where residents Casper and Fader will play sets and toast to the weekly old-school hip-hop party’s long-running host and crowd control specialist, DJ Deacon. (Crowbar, Ybor City) INFO
Pre-INC St Petersburg This gathering of experimental artists comes with a unique guarantee: “Lineup will change at any time without notice.” That shouldn’t be a problem for seasoned vets of the International Noise Conference (INC), which is scheduled for February 3-7 in Miami, and this is a chance for Bay area locals looking for harsh sounds to experience nearly two dozen acts each working through 15-minute sets with no lag or setup time in between. ✔️ The Darling Fire w/Pohgoh/Slap of Reality Members of punk and emo bands The Rocking Horse Winner, Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, Poison the Well, Shai Hulud, As Friends Rust and Strongarm have coalesced under a new moniker — The Darling Fire — and recently completed recording a new album, Dark Celebration, with revered producer J. Robbins. Happening less than a month after The Darling Fire’s first show, this record shop gig finds the band — led in part by Jolie Lindholm — joined by a pair of long-running Bay area acts, Pohgoh (whose latest album was also produced by Robbins) and Slap of Reality. Read CL’s interview with Lindholm here. (Microgroove, Tampa) INFO
