Drummer Keith Ulrey told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that Pohgoh will play songs form all three of its albums, spanning the breadth of the band’s more than three-decade career that dates all the way back to In Memory of Bab, along with a new tune and probable surprise.
Pohgoh doesn’t typically play in the acoustic format, but UIrey said that stripping the tunes down was a fun exercise.
And it’s a good occasion, too, as the venue is celebrating the first anniversary of its Sunday Service monthly series. “When Tim [Ogden, founder of Deviant Libation] asked us months ago to be a part of his Sunday Service events, we felt it would be a nice relaxed environment to try out these arrangements,” Ulrey added.
While it’s extremely rare to see Pohgoh play acoustic, it’s not like shows from the band fronted by songwriter Susie Richardson Ulrey are that common either.
“We like to look at shows as events, something special to show and share with everyone. It makes playing live more exciting for us while not burning out friends and longtime fans of the band by playing out too often,” Keith said about the band’s gig selection. “Plus, we’re all older, with kids, jobs and responsibilities so being choosy can also be attributed to that, you know? It feels more rewarding.”
Tickets to see Pohgoh play Deviant Libation on Sunday, Aug. 24 are $5 at the door.
