Today in rock history, on this date in 1968. The Doors released its third album, Waiting For The Sun. The album is significant in that it was the one and only Doors album to reach the no. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard album chart. The album contains the singles “Hello, I Love You” (which was a no. 1 hit for the band as well) and “The Unknown Soldier.” In other Doors-related events, lead singer and poet/songwriter Jim Morrison passed away on this same date in 1971 in Paris, France as a result of a heart attack.

Today in rock history, on this date in 1968. While attending a gathering at singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell’s home in the Laurel Canyon area of Los Angeles, former Byrds member David Crosby, former Hollies member Graham Nash and former Buffalo Springfield member Stephen Stills played music together for the very first time. The trio would go on to form the highly successful group Crosby, Stills & Nash as a result of this event.

Today in rock history, on this date in 1969. Founding member of The Rolling Stones Brian Jones passed away as a result of drowning led on by drug and alcohol abuse. Jones was living at an estate called Cotchford Farm in East Sussex which was formerly owned by A.A. Milne, author of the Winnie The Pooh books. His death at age 27 was mourned by Stones fans all over the world.

Today in rock history, on this date in 1982. British synthesizer band Human League hits no. 1 in the U.S. with its breakout hit, “Don’t You Want Me” and remained at the top spot for a three-week run. The song hit the top spot in several countries around the globe and proved to be one of the most successful singles of the 1980s. With the rise of new bands and new sounds at the dawning of the 80s and the advent of MTV providing airplay for so many new bands, the success of the single helped to usher in a new era in record sales. The song has remained incredibly popular and is one of the most beloved songs of the decade in which it was released.
