The pre-weekend concert calendar is picking up and three noteworthy shows are happening on this Thurs., Jan. 28. Check out the breakdown below, plus see what else is happening tonight.

Bully with Palehound, Big Eyes Led by singer Alicia Bognanno, Bully tiptoes the line between the surf rock moodiness of Best Coast (a band they’ve hit the road with in the past), and the frantic garage band angst of Joyce Manor as driven by the sweetly commanding vocals of frontwoman Alicia Bognanno. The Nashville four-piece is currently on a tour of firsts – supporting their first album, Feels Like (released on Startime/Columbia last summer), and hitting Florida for the first time, ever. Tour warm-up from NYC-spawned ‘90s-tinged alt rock outfit Palehound. (Crowbar, Ybor City) –Leanne Castro

Salute to Duke Ellington Safety Harbor Library Foundation continues its drive to offer diverse programming with this tribute concert. Christiana Drapkin, a DC area jazz vocalist with scat chops, returns for her third performance at the library joined by Bay area musicians Al Sheppard (piano), Alejandro Arenas (bass) and Bob Walker (drums). Their set will touch on songs by the influential jazz master and his frequent collaborator, pianist Billy Strayhorn – “Satin Doll, “ “Sophisticated Lady,” “Mood Indigo” and “Take the A-Train,” among others. Show starts at 7, and the $10 admission supports the foundation’s campaign to raise funds for a second floor meeting room. (Safety Harbor Public Library, Safety Harbor)–Leilani Polk

Colin Hay He comes from a land down under, and while Colin Hay hasn’t played with the group behind that particular referenced song in many years (and he’s actually from Scotland and currently based in LA), it’ll likely always be the easiest way writers like myself remind readers like you who he is. Since 1987, Hay has churned out a dozen solo LPs that showcase his songwriting chops beyond Men at Work, and his distinctively silky intones are in fine form on the one prompting his current tour, 2015’s Next Year People. (Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) –LP
