Purple Rain Album Discussion Party Ever hear somebody mention how “dancing about architecture” is like “writing about music?” This one’s kind of like that. Since Prince’s passing still makes us weep a little inside, we’re writing about the launch of monthly discussion series Phonogenics 101 who meet once a month to gab about an album song by song “with love.” This hump day pow wow will tackle Prince and the Revolution's Purple Rain starting at 8 p.m. The talk is wide open for anyone who loves music, so do not be afraid to BYOB, or snacks, or whatever you chatty Cathy’s like to munch on while running your yappers. Lil Yachty Of all the über-hyped rappers du jour coming through Orpheum theses days, Lil Yachty might be the most exciting. Maybe it's the way critics are dumbfounded by his warbly — now familiar — autotuned delivery. Perhaps it's the way he freestyled over K-pop instrumentals. Is it his seemingly eternal positive outlook? Probably the red, beaded dreads. No one really knows, but the 19-year-old (who celebrates a birthday the day before he plays Ybor City) turns heads wherever he goes or whenever his voice comes loudly over the speakers. Like him or not, Yachty has worked with PARTYNEXTDOOR, Ferrari Ferrell, Jace, and D.R.A.M. Shit, even Vancouver journalist Nardwuar got in on the action last week, and things don’t look to be slowing down. Need a primer? Watch Keep Sailing, FADER magazine’s lil’ documentary on Lil Yachty, then see if you want a ticket. (Orpheum, Ybor City — INFO)
