Permanent Makeup w/VV/Gay Scare St. Pete punk band Permanent Makeup spent its Fourth of July releasing a new, 10-track album of off-kilter, biting guitar rock that takes more than a few steely stabs at the strange state of things (“Urban Planning,” “Caligula Seemed Fun at First” and “Apolitical” are all tight jams), and it’s also investing proceeds right back into the pussies that are under attack these days by donating all the proceeds from sales to Planned Parenthood. Another St. Pete outfit — queer noise punk band Gay Scare — plays its first show at this one, and your $5 cover will go towards making sure VV from Richmond, Virginia makes it to its next tour stop without running out of gas. Garbage w/Blondie/Deap Valley The influence Deborah Harry has had on female singers and performers is immeasurable. The strong, seductive Blondie lead singer smashed the stereotype of the quaint, harmless girl singer and proved that she was every bit as much a viable part of her band and the guys who played behind her. Since Blondie’s rise to fame dating back to the mid-1970’s in New York City’s gritty Bowery area, her presence has undoubtedly inspired young girls worldwide to write songs, to sing, to pick up a guitar or to just be free to be and look however they want.
Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson was probably one of those who felt compelled to adopt a life in rock thanks to the freedom Harry flaunted as one of the most dynamic and striking figures the genre has ever boasted. In what’s probably the most intriguing double-bill of the summer, veteran new wave giants Blondie are hitting the road with 90’s modern rock darlings Garbage on a co-headlining tour through the States. The “Rage and Rapture Tour”, as it’s being billed, is a prime opportunity to see two of the most distinctive and mesmerizing female performers of all time do their thing on the very same night. Scottish-born Manson and Garbage are riding on the heels of the band's most current, warmly received independently-released album, 2016’s Strange Little Birds (Stunvolume Records) and Blondie is touring in support of their superb new album, Pollinator (BMG). Released this past May, it’s Debbie and company’s strongest and most consistent album in years. Expect all the hits both band have to offer and some newer material too and let each of these ladies show you that rock and roll is most certainly not just a man’s world. Acoustic BBQ w/Cormac Kavanagh/Vinnie Cosentino In last week's cover story, DieAlps! principal Frank Calcaterra detailed the contributions ex-members Vinnie Cosentino and Cormac Kavanagh made to the band's new LP, Our City (released August 4 via New Granada Records). There’s nothing I could program with my midi drum software that [Vinnie] wasn’t capable of playing," Calcaterra said, adding that "we thought we hit the jackpot when we added Cormac on keys. He basically just knew what to do from the start, and added in some ideas Connie and I probably would have never been able to think of ourselves. Well both of those guys will play New World Brewery's free acoustic BBQ series. There's no cover, but bring money for $5 plates of 'cue. (New World Brewery, Ybor City) INFO
