WMNF is moving its “Event Horizon” program from Monday overnight to the 11 p.m. Sunday slot, and host Ira Hankin is marking the change with a live, on-air event featuring Nasal Spray, the retro, synth-driven dream-pop project of Phil Taylor.
In April, Taylor told CL that the band is influenced by Italo-disco acts like Clio and Roberto Ferrante’s Pineapples as well as vaporwave artists like Eyeliner and Body Line. Hankin was inspired to do radio back in high school and spent his time on-air at the University of Maryland introducing listeners to out-of-the-box sounds from acts like Pere Ubu, The Residents, 1/2 Japanese and Chrome.
Hankin, who’s been an on-air host at WMNF since 2014, said that he has loved everything Taylor has done on past projects like Sleeping Pills and Cold Medicine, and that he’s thrilled to have Nasal Spray kick off this new era of “Event Horizon,” which is a thrilling, free-form, genre-agnostic block of scheduling on the WMNF calendar.
“I really like the textures and melodies that he creates with synthesizers and how well his voice matches the music,” Hankin said. “It is my joy to share the music I love and help spread it to new ears.”
Listen to the band via 88.5-FM on Sunday, June 16. Get a sneak preview when Nasal Spray opens a June 14 show where Tampa rock band Glove — which has a brand of darkwave-influenced pop that is going to sound sumptuous on Hooch and Hive’s stellar sound system — plays headliner.
