Tonight in live music: Kim Lenz and The Jaguars, Telekinetic Walrus & more

A breakdown of concerts happening this Fri., Aug. 21, plus a look at what's coming up this weekend.

Hey look — you made it to Friday. Take a minute to heave a sigh of relief. But don't be content with veg time on the couch — go see some live music! Here's what's happening this Fri., Aug. 21, plus a look at what's coming up this weekend. Who knows? Maybe there's something you'll want to see every night this weekend...

Kim Lenz and The Jaguars with Ted Stevens & the Doo Shots Voted “Rockabilly Female of the Year” at the 2015 Ameripolitan Music Awards, Texas-raised LA-based songstress Kim Lenz has been lauded as the feminine counterpart to Elvis Presley by Rolling Stone with a soulful vintage rock sound propelled by her sneering, sultry drawl and the tight instrumentals of her three-piece band, The Jaguars. (Skipper's Smokehouse, Tampa)

Fil Pate Organ Trio Favored local string-playing great Fil Pate is known for his sit-ins and collabs with acts ranging from Rich Whiteley to Applebutter Express, but he also has plenty of solo material that puts his fine picking talents on full display. With his trio – which also encompasses Casey Otto (organ, keys, left hand bass) and Leo Suarez (drums) – he sets aside his go-to mandolin in favor of acoustic guitar. They’ll be making their Hideaway Café debut fresh from the studio and have promised to perform some new material along with covers by choice artists. (Hideaway Café & Recording Studio, St. Petersburg)

Beres Hammond The Jamaican singer-toaster makes his regularly scheduled appearance at Jannus, to deliver his usual blend of uplifting reggae odes and soulful lovers rock serenades. Hammond’s last album, the double-disc One Love, One Life, earned a 2014 Grammy nomination. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

Rob Thomas Yes, you’re reading right, and no, Rob Thomas is not returning a mere month after his last stop in town, but making up for the July 24 date he had to postpone due to a medical emergency with wife Marisol. Young folk-blues songstress Ella Jet plays the support stage in the REH courtyard prior to the show’s start. Read more about her and bandmate Brett Bowcutt right here. (Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater)

Telekinetic Walrus with Betty Dawl Several months back, I stumbled into a Telekentic Walrus show and went through a full cycle of emotions that started somewhere at mystified WTF?, blazed along into thunderstruck holy shit!, and ended with dazzled appreciation at the way all the seemingly disparate influences came together into one rather vibrant and bizarrely extravagant whole. Miami’s cult-popular musical ensemble is composed of male and female producers, instrumentalists, singers and emcees who perform in Parliament Funkadelic-style costumery while mixing elements of hip hop, psychedelia and bass-pounding electro in magnetic tracks like “The Spaceship with the Heavy Bass Bump,” its eerie falsetto-toned lead vocals and rapped verses backed by gruff vocal spazzes and a blend of weird drifting sax notes and lowend fizzness. A must-see. (New World Brewery, Ybor City)

That Thing Sold as a collision of the festival and rave scenes, That Thing finds three jammy, reggae-flavored rock bands (Wild Root, The Hobies and Seranation) joined by a few electro producers (Gigglebyte and SoundKRFT) in this festive night of creativity that also features live interactive group and 3D art making. Glow sticks, feathered headpieces and painted faces welcome; dancing encouraged, not required. (Local 662, St. Petersburg)

TC Carr & Bolts of Blue CD Release Party Florida’s leading harp blower, soulfully smoky-voiced singer and blues/roots songwriter T.C. Carr stages two shows celebrating the completion of the new album with his Bolts of Blue (guitarist Josh Nelms, bassist Vinnie Seplesky and drummer Dennis McCarthy). This St. Pete showing on Palladium’s Side Door stage, then again the following night in Tampa at the Skipperdome. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)
