Yes, you can legally own a zebra in Florida.

Reason no. 8547 to not illegally possess exotic animals: Sometimes you have to kill them when they escape.

NewsJax4 said that, on Wednesday, a pet zebra escaped from the Cottonwood Ranch on Old Dixie Highway in Callahan in Nassau County, which is approximately 200 miles from Tampa Bay.

The creature, whose name was Shadow, hurt itself upon escape according to the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, and the owner was forced to kill the zebra so that it didn’t hurt anyone.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators said that the owner — whose identity was not immediately released — didn't have a valid captive wildlife license. According to NewsJax4, someone can own a zebra in Florida, though it requires a state permit; FWC did not say whether the owner will face charges.

Part of the property from which the zebra escaped functions as a rural, Instagram-ready wedding venue.
