BEST CHEF TO WATCH: Daniel Womack, Tedescos Grillside

This local kid came home to visit his mom and landed a job at the helm of Tedesco’s Grillside, one of the most interesting restaurants to hit St. Pete this year. Twenty-three-year-old Womack — who cut his teeth at Redwoods, the Vinoy and Bella Brava — has a happy penchant for culinary excess. His Southern-inspired cuisine is piled perilously high and laced with profound amounts of fat and sugar. Yum. He has some problems to overcome — that overblown style sometimes destroys the elegance or complexity in his food — but within a few short weeks Womack stamped a culinary identity onto a restaurant that has struggled to find itself through two sets of owners. With a little age and experience under his belt, he might come to have a serious impact on the St. Pete restaurant scene.
