Bungalow on the Outside

What makes an arts and crafts bungalow stand out from the rest? According to Jane Powell, author of five popular books on bungalows and featured designer on HGTV, it's all in the details.

In Bungalow Details: Exterior, Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen identify the finer points and visual characteristics that make a bungalow a bungalow, offer insight into the "Arts & Crafts" philosophy, and show how to incorporate important details into your own bungalow. The book is, as you'd expect, extremely comprehensive, with historical sidebars, vivid color photos, diagrams, general how-to information, and thorough explanations on anything from recognizing, fixing and maintaining historic windows to picking out keyholes and knockers. Plus, it's a good book to have if you're an old house freak and want to know how to correctly identify an honest to goodness bungalow.

Powell visits the Bay area to talk about bungalow exteriors at two events this weekend. For more information, call 813-610-5255.

Bungalow Talks, 7-9 p.m. Thu., April 20, Seminole Heights United Methodist Church, 6111 N. Central Ave., Tampa; and 11 a.m. Sat., April 22, The Craftsman House, 2955 Central Ave., St. Petersburg.
