DIY green beauty: Make your own natural bath and body care gifts

This recipe from TreeHugger for homemade soap is somewhat involved and will make you feel like a mad scientist, seeing as it deals with ingredients that are caustic (lye) and could possibly start a fire. But how accomplished will you feel after your bars of natural soap are cooled, cut and in the hands of some very happy giftees? (This project is definitely not one for kids.)

Facial scrubs are also simple to throw together and these instructions from Care2 have recipes for dry, normal, and oily skin.

The easiest (and least expensive) recipe of all has to be for this green tea facial wash and toner. All you need are green tea bags and water.

As for fragrance, forget the expensive alcohol-based ones at the mall and give natural, non-toxic essential oils made from herbs and flowers. You can find them at almost every natural food market in the personal care aisle.

Give a happy, healthy, homemade holiday this year!

Personal care items like soap and fragrances are big sellers during the holiday season. People tend to drop a fair amount of dough on cosmetics gifts at stores like Bath and Body Works and Victoria's Secret. But, as we've preached before on this site, numerous brands of cosmetics on the market contain chemicals that aren't so great for your skin. They can be counterproductive (i.e.: drying out skin) and they're full of carcinogens, neurotoxins, and reproductive toxins.

Now, I don't want you have to rewrite your holiday shopping list, but there are some great natural alternatives to those bath and body products at the "big box" stores and they can also end up saving you money: homemade beauty products!

Yes, making your own gifts will probably take more time than driving to the mall, picking out your loot and paying for it, but using your own two hands to create a gift makes it so much more personal and, not to mention, self-satisfying.
