During a brief visit last year, renowned philosopher Dr. Cornel West commended local leaders on their efforts to preserve local history despite the ever-present threat of gentrification. He went on to deliver a rousing talk about the scourge of racism still alive and well in America in his signature provocative manner.
On Wednesday, he comes back as part of St. Petersburg College’s third annual Heritage Lecture Series.
A hell of a lot has happened since that last visit when it comes to race and social justice; West’s voice will be a refreshing antidote to the bigoted banter to which we’ve grown all too accustomed.
Other speakers in the series include New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow and historian/author Dr. Gerald Horne. Wed., Jan. 13, 7 p.m., SPC Allstate Center campus, 3200 34th St. S., St. Petersburg. spcollege.edu.
