Florida Senate passes watered-down Supreme Court bill

Lakeland Republican Paula Dockery had been one of those critical members of the legislation in the GOP Senate. She said the original bill "was exceeding what was comfortable" for her, but she would support it anyhow.

Democratic Senator Maria Sachs said the original provisions in the Cannon House bill "made all of us shudder."

Eastern Hillsborough Senator Ronda Storms chimed in that the only element of the original legislation she didn't like was splitting the Court up into a Criminal and Civil Division.

The bill passed on a 28-11 margin.

Shockingly, House Speaker Cannon called the vote "a win," which is correct only if he considers it okay that half of his original bill was gutted.

The measure will still go to voters next year before it can become law.

So much for Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon's radical plan to split up the state Supreme Court and add three new justices — all of whom would have been appointed by Governor Rick Scott.

With most Democrats opposing the move, and a rumored five to nine Republicans also not favoring the measure in the Senate, that body voted on an original amendment from Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale on Monday night, that would remove those provisions but leave a requirement for Senate confirmation of Supreme Court appointments, and assure the courts funding from general revenue. It would also let the House have access to confidential judicial investigations.
