Gulfport Public Library has announced its lineup of transgender awareness events scheduled for next month. Through the end of November, the library will invite the public to check out a dynamic guest speaker, an exhibit on loan from the Stonewall National Museum & Archives and a film screening.
The events are essentially designed to highlight the accomplishments of transgender people while fighting transphobia. They’re also free to attend.
Planned in the atrium, the forthcoming exhibit is called Transcending Gender: Bodies and Lives. It address the intersection of gender and transgender folks as part of the larger LGBTQ acronym, according to a press release, as well as cultural and human rights struggles of the transgender community in the U.S. and ongoing issues in the movement.
An opening reception for the exhibit takes place at 7 p.m. Nov. 1. Complimentary wines, cheese and soft drinks are in store, followed by a talk from Tampa native Ashley Brundage. Brundage, who has presented to several Fortune 500 companies, will share how she rose above discrimination and harassment to find employment with one of the country’s major banks.
In addition to the curated selection of books and films with transgender themes on display till December, the library will spotlight its monthly LGBTQ film series at 7 p.m. Nov. 8. The next featured movie is an intimate documentary that follows transgender teen Bennett and his mom, Suzy. During the flick, they both make their own personal transformations.
