August is one of the most crowded months of the year at local shelters, so there’s never been a better time to find a new furry friend.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay will offer free pet adoptions next week, as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative on August 17.

According to their Facebook event page, the event will be from 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and will feature food from the Humane Society’s “Grillin' & Chillin' team,” samples from Mike's Hard Lemonade, and live coverage from 93.3 FLZ with Katie Sommers.

This year will mark Clear the Shelters’ fifth annual campaign. Since its inception in 2015, Clear the Shelters has paired 256,688 pets with new families across the country. As of July 16, more than 1,000 shelters and rescues have registered to participate in the initiative, says to the campaign's website.

The Clear the Shelters campaign exists under the umbrella of NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, which will also be providing coverage of the event on WFLA News Channel 8 and Great 38 WTTA stations.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, which took in a total of 1100 animals in July, states that the rise in these numbers is a seasonal occurrence, likely due to springtime litters, making August the prime time to fight overcrowding through events like Clear the Shelters.
