Romney calls Trump "phony" and "fraud"

Donald J. Trump doesn't give a shit what his party's powers-that-be think, which is probably why they're going after him with their biggest guns in the wake of his success on Super Tuesday.

On Thursday, former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney slammed Trump and urged Republicans not to vote for him.

"This is the very brand of anger that has led other nations into the abyss,” Romeny said. "Here's what I know: Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud. His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University."

Burn!

He continued:

“He's playing the members of the American public for suckers," Romney continued. "He gets a free ride to the White House and all we get is a lousy hat."

That's interesting, man.

Because exactly 49 months ago — February 3, 2012 — Romney beamed as he accepted Trump's endorsement of his own presidential candidacy at a Nevada campaign rally.

Here's what Trump said:

"Mitt is tough, he's smart, he's sharp, he's not going to allow bad things to happen in this country that we love. So, Governor Romney, go get 'em. You can do it."

Romney appeared to be in awe and ever-grateful.

"There are some things that you can't imagine happening in your life," Romney said after shaking hands with Trump. "Being in Trump's magnificent hotel and having his endorsement is a delight. I'm so honored and pleased to have his endorsement and of course I'm looking for the endorsement of the people of Nevada."

We're guessing Romney's change of heart over the presidential frontrunner has nothing to do with bitterness over losing to Trump in last summer's yacht-off.

No, it's another signal of the division within the party over Trump, a loose cannon with some pretty squishy political views who is crushing it in the race to his party's nomination.

Many middle-of-the-road (or center-right) Republicans at local, state and national levels seem appalled at Trump's brashness and bigoted comments, and many surely question his electability in the November general election.
