The City of Tampa is one of the bright blue dots in a purple-at-best state, so it should come as no surprise that it already has an Equal Business Opportunity Program that identifies underrepresented businesses owned by women and minorities.
The inclusionary measures, however, just made even more room at that table when Tampa’s newly elected, first openly-gay mayor signed an executive order to make sure that LGBT-owned businesses are recognized in formal city policies.
In a press release, the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) lauded Tampa’s decision to include NGLCC-certified LGBT Business Enterprises (LGBTBEs) in contracting and procurement opportunities, as well as the city’s commitment to building and educational programs for local small businesses.
“For LGBT citizens of Tampa, this inclusive policy provides fair and equal access to contracting opportunities and economic development programs that drive innovation, create jobs, and promote economic growth throughout the region,” the NGLCC wrote.
Signed at the four-day National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce International Business & Leadership Conference — which wraps today after arriving downtown on August 13 — the order puts Tampa in the company of Orlando, which is the only other city in Florida to recognize LGBTQ-owned businesses in such an official capacity.
“Mayor Castor has declared Tampa as ‘open for business’ with all diverse communities, and has affirmed that ‘if you can buy it, a certified LGBT-owned business can supply it,’” NGLCC Co-Founder & President Justin Nelson added. “We are excited to see LGBTBEs in every field from construction to catering and everything in between help grow the economy of Tampa and beyond."
