The Green Community week in review: Oil spill community forum highlights, eating with the seasons, xeriscaping with native plants for a no-fuss lawn, and more

What’s the buzz on the latest issues in the Green Community? Check out what you may have missed last week:

Help the Citizens Preservation Fund stop a landfill – The Citizens Preservation Fund is seeking donations to help with all legal aspects of fighting this hazardous landfill. Although they have made a lot of progress, there is more work to be done.

Could microbes be a natural solution for oil spill cleanup? –  Naturally occurring microbes in the ocean and on the shoreline will eventually eat the oil, break it down, and neutralize most of the toxins. They bind or transform harmful toxins to inert or even edible ingredients.

Code Green Community's efforts toward a sustainable Tampa Bay (videos) – If there were ever a time where a movement was needed to shift our society away from fossil fuel use, now is the time and we are the ones we've been waiting for!

Senator Nelson says Florida needs hundreds more skimmers to combat approaching oil spill – He told the reporters that the rest of the state has time to get ready before the oil reaches their shores and they should get ready. If you are reading this and you live beyond the Panhandle, then please make your local government take action. Also, keep letting Governor Crist and DEP Sec. Mike Sole know that our beaches are not going to be Florida’s “best booms” and we expect them to wake up and get busy. Sen. Nelson does not think that any coast in Florida is safe from the oil.
