What were they thinking? Marketing fails from around town

Aluminum Foil Fail:

This was found during another one of my trips to Publix:

What's interesting about these is that they make no sense whatsoever from a marketing standpoint. Marketing should "create want." When a consumer looks at packaging, it should immediately communicate the benefit of the product. I could be wrong, but I just don't think there is a huge market for garbage bags that are either preferred by dogs, or that are just the right size for them to poke their noses in the garbage. Nor do I think that the point of aluminum foil is the little animals that can be made despite my love of  "Arigato's" (that will always make a nifty aluminum foil animal with your leftovers.)

I call this one "Leg of Lamp"

Cola Fail:

Wow, I forgot I live in the south, but even so, redneck cola is not going to be in my basket.

Restaurant Fail:

I found this little Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. I wonder if they realize how wrong their name is?

The moral of the story? Be smart when putting together your packaging because you'll never know when you'll find me, snapping some pictures and posting them on the internet!

About the author:  Laura Betterly runs Yada Yada Markeing, Inc., a Tampa Bay marketing firm specializing in helping companies gain visibility in their market.

My chosen career path is marketing. Marketing myself, marketing my clients and marketing new ideas. Maybe that has made me a bit more sensitive than most to marketing that doesn't work, but I know, deep in my heart that most people are not that stupid. This collection of pictures and their associated comments are of things that I have collected over the last year. Some of these come from the shelves of Publix, others are from my associated travels. All are what I affectionately call "marketing fails."

FAIL! To fail is to be either: Exceptionally bad at something, or to do/say something stupid to people, or for an item/thing to fail, it has to be not what it is, such as a funny comic not being funny, etc.

Garbage Bag Fail:

This one was found during one of my weekly trips to Publix:

I don't know about you, but I'm going out to buy the garbage bags preferred by dogs!
