Surrounding Tampa Bay cities like Bradenton, Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Largo received heat advisory warnings, while cities as far south as Ft. Myers and Venice Beach were also included in this morning’s “urgent” weather message from NWS.
A heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service is meant to bring awareness to the people in that area, as they can be affected by the intense heat if precautions aren’t taken. High heat index values can greatly increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke for those outdoors.
“Take extra precautions…if you work or spend time outside. When possible…reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water,” the National Weather Service advises.
Last month, Tampa Bay had the hottest May in recorded history, with an average temperature of 78.8 degrees beating the previous record of 75.1 set in 1940, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Today is looking to be the hottest day in the Tampa Bay area this week, with the weekend bringing rain and lower temperatures, finally.
We don’t need to be breaking any more heat records.
