“We’re gonna pants Lyle Lovett,” frontman MC Taylor joked in the middle of his band’s rollicking set for Ybor City on Monday night. Taylor and his Hiss bandmates looked like a band having a really good time at Crowbar, where onstage banter also included the merits of Tallahassee (the Goodwill had Razor scooters)—and they played like one, too.
“Red Rose Nantahala,” from 2013’s Haw had a renewed spirit to match the song’s joyful lyric, “Oh lord, let me be happy,” and on “Newborn Child” keyboardist Sam Fribush laid down a thick pomade of soul a la Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.”
The Hiss quintet even worked in a take on Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken” as part of a near-perfect evening that started with a solid set by Los Angeles’ Color Green.
