Octagonal homes are pretty rare to find, let alone one on its own island. The craze reached its peak in the late 19th century and was popularized by famed publisher and doctor Orson Squire Fowler, who practiced the insanely racist pseudo science of phrenology, and also believed that the circle was nature’s most perfect form. Of course, circular construction materials weren't available in the 1800s, so the octagon home was born. The niche style of architecture made a resurgence again in the 1970s, mostly through the form of customizable kits.
