Mitch Perry Report: Qualifying week for state candidates

In Tampa Bay politics, it's Republican vs. Republican.

In the Tampa Bay area there has been lots of speculation about various candidates maneuvering to run in various state house and senate seats - with the deadline to announce this coming Friday.

Whether it's Jack Latvala debating which district to run in in Pinellas County, or Tom Lee vs. Rachel Burgin running for Ronda Storms' previous senate seat, or John Legg now running against Jim Norman, there's one thing obviously in common - whatever you want to say about the Tampa Bay region, all of the jockeying around here is Republican vs. Republican, sort of microcosm of what goes on up at the state level in Tallahassee.

That was made manifest this past weekend in Tampa at the Florida Democratic party caucus this Saturday. While delegates were chosen during the day to go to Charlotte for the DNC later this summer, Florida Democrats that night went nostalgic, honoring Betty Castor, Bob Graham and Les Miller, with no up and coming members (or gubernatorial candidates) being spotlighted.

One Democrat disgusted by what she says is the state's assault on public education the past couple of years is Karen Castor-Dentel, running for a state house office in Maitland near Orlando. And yes, she's related to Kathy and Betty..
On Saturday Occupy Tampa and representatives from other local Occupy groups gathered for the first time in months at Lykes Gaslight Park in Tampa, a return to where the local Occupy movement originated last October.
